Snygg a unanimous choice for fifth-straight year
The North Polk and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball teams each had two players named to the all-Heart of Iowa Conference Large School Division first team recently by the conference coaches.
North Polk seniors Sammy Snygg and Casie Christensen were joined by CMB senior Jordan Maher and sophomore Zeah Peterson on the Large School Division first team. Snygg was named a unanimous pick to the first team for the fifth-straight season while Christensen was a first-team choice for the second year in a row and Maher and Peterson both made it for the first time.
Snygg, the state's all-time strikeout queen, went 33-6 on the mound with a sparkling 0.33 earned-run average and 457 strikeouts against just 38 walks in 268 1/3 innings while helping North Polk tie Bondurant-Farrar for the best record in the conference at 17-1. Iowa's all-time home run leader was also a force with the bat as she hit .449 with 16 doubles, five triples and 12 home runs while scoring and driving in 41 runs apiece.
Christensen hit .356 from the leadoff spot in the batting order and she also scored 33 runs and swiped 31 bases. The Comet second baseman also made 80 putouts and 62 assists in the field, while committing three errors to finish with a .979 fielding average.
Maher hit .390 with six doubles, four triples and two home runs while she scored 29 runs, knocked in 28 and added 26 steals. On defense, Maher made 70 assists and 50 putouts with a .952 fielding average at second base.
Peterson was the only non-senior selected to the first team as the sophomore catcher hit .370 with 10 doubles, two home runs and 29 RBI. Peterson also made 27 assists and just one error defensively.
Making up the rest of the Large School Division first team were: Bondurant-Farrar pitcher Dacia Miller, catcher Hannah Baker and infielder Trisha Rooney, Prairie City-Monroe infielder Lindsey VandeWall and outfielder Shelby Feldt, Jefferson-Scranton/Paton Churdan outfielder Addie Wright and Roland-Story outfielder McKena Carlson. Miller joined Snygg as a unanimous selection.
CMB shortstop Abby Maher made the Large School Division second team. The junior hit .390 with 32 runs and 20 RBI and she also recorded 62 assists and 51 putouts on defense.
Senior catcher Rachel Hall and freshman outfielder Miranda Schouten were named honorable mention for North Polk.
Hall moved over to catcher from third base this season and she hit .288 with 12 doubles, two homers and 24 RBI while tallying 14 assists and just one error on defense. Schouten hit .232 with 25 runs and 13 RBI and she made 19 putouts and three assists with only one error in the field.
Seniors Jackie Coughenour and Hannah Paul were the honorable mention choices from CMB.
Coughenour hit .306 with 20 runs and 12 steals and she also made 40 assists and 21 putouts and third base. Paul hit .248 with six doubles and 21 RBI and she only had three errors in 248 chances at first base.
