Some talented musicians will be making their way to Cambridge for Jubilee Days this weekend. Bob Dorr and The Blue Band will be taking the stage at Water Street Bar and Grill on Friday, June 12, from 8 p.m. until midnight, and Paul "Mayo" Mayasich and his trio will perform at the same time on Saturday evening.
The Blue Band was started in Cedar Falls in 1981 and over the band's almost three-decade run, there have been nearly 20 significantly contributing players in the band, according to the band's Website www.theblueband.com. The group averages 100-plus shows per year, primarily staying within a 300-mile radius of its home base in Cedar Falls.
The band has released more than 20 albums and has opened shows for B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and Robert Cray among others. Lead singer Bob Dorr has received much recognition for his musical talents. He was inducted into the Iowa Rock n' Roll Music Association Hall of Fame in September 2000. In April 2006, Bob was inducted into the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. And in 2007 he was re-inducted into the Iowa Rock n' Roll Music Association Hall of Fame as leader of The Blue Band, according to the band's Web site.
Paul "Mayo" Mayasich is the lead in his own blues rock trio. The band from the Twin Cities plays a variety of music including roots, soulful blues, rock, unique re-worked covers and original funk and gut-bucket tunes written by Mayasich, according to the band's Web site at www.benderheads.com.
A native of the Iron Range of Minnesota, Mayasich moved to the Twin Cities in 1987, where he became the house guitarist at Red's Roost. He has played sideman for many regional and national recording artists, and has toured extensively in the United States and Europe, according to his Web site. Rounding out the trio are Billy Thommes on drums and Billy Franze on bass, who were once the rhythm section for Jonny Lang.
Mayasich said he heard about the Water Street Bar and Grill from a local musician friend, Dan Jones. Mayasich was taking a trip to Austin, Texas to open for Arc Angels at Antone's last March, and Jones offered the band his regular Wednesday night 'gig' at the bar and grill to make some money for the trip.
"We loved the place and the people," said Mayasich. "Cambridge is a slice of Americana, and we are looking forward to spending more time there this summer."
Water Street Bar and Grill employee Heather Walters everyone loved the performance when Mayasich was there in March.
"They were so good, we immediately asked them back," she said. The band will be returning for a second summer show on Aug. 15.
