A group of moms in Collins and Maxwell are committed to helping youth in their communities.
The Maxwell Mother's Club, which has served youth in the Collins-Maxwell School District for the last 52 years, will host a Summer Blast Off event in the Maxwell City Park at the end of May.
Current club officers are Susan Tankersley, president; Misty Coughenour, vice president; Theresa Peters, treasurer and Marcy Cheville, secretary.
Tankersley said they've had, on average, 20 members per year and become honorary members after 10 years of service.
"Most members that join stay in the club for at least the 10 years, with some in it much longer and still active," she said. "Our purpose is to provide scholarships for graduating Collins-Maxwell seniors and to sponsor enrichment programs for the children of our communities."
The club has several annual projects, like the Maxwell Easter Egg Hunt, serving breakfast during Maxwell's Old Settler's Picnic in August and an auction in November.
The Summer Blast Off is a new idea, and Tankersley said they hope to make it an annual event, too.
Proceeds from the Summer Blast Off event will help support students at Collins-Maxwell.
"All the funds that we raised throughout the year are given back to seniors at Collins-Maxwell in the form of a scholarship," Tankersley said.
They have done several fundraisers in the past, including working at Iowa State basketball games, hosting jewelry parties, selling Casey's pizza cards, putting on auctions and serving breakfast each year at Maxwell's Old Settlers picnic.
In the past, the club has also donated funds to many causes in Collins and Maxwell, including PIE, post prom, Maxwell football league, Maxwell Fire Department and purchased clothing and items for children in need.
The Summer Blast Off will be held on Friday, May 29, from 6-9 p.m. in the Maxwell City Park. It will include inflatables and concessions. The event is for ages 2-12 years old, and wrist bands are $7 a piece. Tickets can be purchased beforehand at Toots' Cuttin' Parlor and Logsdon's Grocery in Maxwell. They can also be purchased at the event.
"We hope to see the park full," Tankersley said. "Feel free to bring your lawn chairs, sit down and enjoy yourselves."
In case of rain or flooding in the park, the event will be moved to the Collins-Maxwell High School gymnasium.
