2. Town where you live? Slater
3. Where did you grow up? Chuck calls Alton his home town. Helen grew up in Des Moines.
4. What is (or was) your occupation? Chuck's last position was with the Iowa National Guard as the state contracting officer. Helen worked as a research librarian at Pioneer Hi-Bred International in Des Moines.
5. What word best describes your personality? Chuck is an extrovert.
6. What is your favorite TV show? Chuck likes to watch professional golf. Helen likes the mystery type or period stories, such as the books by Jane Austin made for TV.
7. What type of music do you like to listen to? We like everything but hard rock or heavy metal.
8. If you could live in any other state, which state would you live in and why?
We haven't experienced all other states so it is hard to say; however, since our kids and grandchildren all live in Kansas, we would choose to live closer to them.
9. What's your favorite season of the year and why? Spring - the time when we can get outside for all the activities that it allows
10. Do you have a favorite card game or board game? No
11. What meal do you like best? Chuck's steak on the barbecue. Helen's Eggs Benedict at breakfast time.
12. What hobbies or pastimes do you enjoy most? Church - our church family, the activities and committees
Cooking - especially for Senior Dinner once a month at Slater United Methodist Church
Singing with the Songbirds, a group from the Heartland Senior Services. We sing all over the county to entertain folks who are limited in their activity. We practice every week and perform several times each month
Gardening - in our own yard and various other places in Slater
Riding Bicycles - We have three-wheeled recumbent bicycles and hybrid uprights for variety. We're incredibly lucky to have bike trails going right through Slater and we take full advantage of them.
Golfing - Chuck has been golfing ever since he was a kid. Helen started playing when she retired.
Bowling - We joined the senior league in Ames, but we have a long way to go to get as good as most of the other bowlers.
13. What groups do you belong to? American Legion and Auxiliary, Slater/Sheldahl Food Pantry, Slater Community Club, Garden and Study Club
14. What's your favorite color and why?
Chuck says he likes beige. (Helen speculates it lets his extroversion show through.)
15. Would you rather live in a very old house with lots of character or a new house where everything worked perfectly? We would rather live in a house with lots of character where everything worked perfectly.
16. What's the best book you've read in the past few years? Helen recently enjoyed "90 Minutes in Heaven" and is currently finding "The Shack" interesting.
17. Who are the members of your family? We have three children, Greg, Nancy, and Jennifer, and five grandchildren, Emily, Alec, Sydney, Cameron, and Christopher.
18. What's your favorite thing to eat with chocolate in it? We like to make truffles and test the various flavors we make.
19. What was the best present you ever received as a child? Chuck's best present was a regular gauge Lionel train set with a smoking engine.
20. Did you have a teacher who inspired you, and how? Helen was inspired by Mrs. Hatfield (third grade) and an elementary music teacher. They both were great examples of respect and kindness for everyone..
Chuck was inspired by his basketball and baseball coach, Orville Madden. Mr. Madden 'inspired' his 'kids' to run fast by using a cattle prod to encourage them (really!).
21. What place in the world have you not visited, but would most like to visit? The Netherlands.
22. Did you ever learn to play a musical instrument? Chuck played a saxophone, and Helen played the piano.
23. Do you love waking up in the morning or hate waking up in the morning? Depends on the day.
24. What's one of your fondest childhood memories? Chuck has fond memories of his experience at the Valley Forge, Boy Scout Jamboree. Helen enjoyed fishing and camping.
25. What do you consider the "good old days" and what do you miss most about them? Chuck misses 25 cent/gallon gas and nickel double-dip ice cream cones. Helen misses being able to run.
