A trip to Huxley Family Physicians feels as much like a visit with a neighbor as it does an appointment with a doctor. The physicians and nurses make it a point to make their patients, young and old, feel comfortable and welcome.
That may be why Hollie Wicker PA-C (physicians assistant certified) has found a good fit there. Raised in Madrid, she is a no stranger to the sense of community found in small towns.
Wicker started at Huxley Family Physicians on Aug. 18, and said she is happy to be in a small town close to home.
"I like the smaller clinic atmosphere," she said.
Though Wicker is new to Huxley Family Physicians, she is not new to the medical field. She spent several years working as a registered nurse after receiving her associate degree in nursing from Mercy College of Health Science. Then she decided to continue her education and completed her physician's assistant degree and master's degree in science from Des Moines University. Prior to taking her current position, she worked at Mercy West Family Practice and Urgent Care in Clive.
Wicker said she decided to go into medicine because she likes the challenge and she enjoys helping people. One of her favorite parts of the job is patient education - teaching her patients about things like diabetes, cholesterol and preventative measures.
Wicker lives in Madrid with her husband Jay and their two sons, 7-year-old Logan and 16-month-old Preston. When she is not at work, her favorite thing to do is hang out with her family. She also enjoys outdoor activities.
The staff at Huxley Family Physicians is happy to have Wicker on board.
"Hollie grew up and still lives in this area. When I had the opportunity to have her as a student, I knew that her hometown values would make her a perfect fit at Huxley Family Physicians," said Dr. Kirk Peterson.
Wicker is currently accepting new patients and enjoys working with people of all ages.
