The Raiders held the Trojans to 155 yards of total offense and they recovered four fumbles on the night. Offensively CMB used an effective rushing attack and great and great discipline to help the team earn an impressive victory.
"I don't think you ever expect to handle a West Marshall team the way we did," CMB head coach Rob Luther said. "We got on them early and we just didn't let up."
CMB led 6-0 after one quarter and then broke the game open with three second quarter touchdowns. The defense ignited the big second quarter for CMB as Jake Bucklin scored on a fumble recovery and Joe Langenberg added touchdown runs of 36 and six yards.
The Raider lead grew to 40-0 after three quarters as Langenberg scored two more times on short runs. West Marshall scored on a long pass play early in the fourth quarter to end CMB's shutout bid, but the Raider defense still had plenty of reasons to be excited following its overpowering performance.
Jesse Joyce had eight tackles on the defensive line and middle linebacker Joe Sorenson added seven and Royal Mansfield chipped in six. Langenberg, Bucklin, Parker Murphy and Travis Ethridge each added a fumble recovery as several players made big contributions to the outstanding team defensive effort.
"It really was anchored by Joe in the middle, Jesse played well up front as did our whole defensive line," Luther said. "Everybody played with intensity."
Offensively CMB was content just to keep pounding the ball at the Trojans. The Raiders only threw five times during the game as they grinded out 203 of their 266 yards on the ground.
"We moved the sticks," Luther said. "There's definitely some improving to do on the offensive side, but Joe had a nice ball game and we got some points on the board."
Langenberg ended up with 120 yards rushing on 20 carries and he scored five touchdowns. Raider quarterback Danny Samson ran for 46 yards and he also threw for 55 while Murphy had the biggest reception of the day for CMB with a 46-yard haul.
This week CMB travels to Alleman to take on North Polk, a 20-7 victor over Bondurant-Farrar in its opener. The Comets were a state playoff team a year ago and they will have revenge on their minds after CMB rallied to knock them off in Baxter last year.
"North Polk is very physical and they're coming off a big win this week," Luther said. "We're going to have our hands full."
The Raider-Comet contest is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
