Which song will it be? Perhaps "Sideways," by Dierks Bentley, or "Whatever It Is," by the Zae Brown Band. Maybe it could be the "National Anthem" or even the classic, "Somewhere Over The Rainbow."
Whatever song is chosen, you can enjoy watching it being performed at the very popular "Lip Sync Contest" at this weekend's Zearing Days celebration. According to Ryan Heldt, the singing event has been popular for about eight years, and kids, kindergarten-age and up, take part.
"The first year this contest began, it wasn't very popular," said Jackie Dunlap. "Once the kids started to see what it was all about, the amount of contestants really grew. The event begins later in the afternoon, and it's neat to look up and see all the people who gather to watch and see how many kids from our community are participating."
"Many of the kids dress up for the occasion and really get into character for the songs that they sing," stated Heldt. "I remember watching Nick Price dressed up as 'Weird Al' Yankovic. He had the glasses and pocket protector and lip sang the song, "White and Nerdy." It was great!"
"My favorite memory," said Jackie, "Was watching my daughters and their friends perform "Don't Cha Wish Your Girlfriend Was Hot Like Me," by Pussycat Dolls. The girls dressed up as old women, walking with walkers and shaking their big buns. I still laugh every time I think about them performing that song."
The kids are grouped into three classes: elementary, junior high and high school, and are judged on originality and costumes. Trophies are awarded for first, second and third place, and everyone who enters receives a participation ribbon and free ice cream. Many of the songs are current pop and country hits, and a lot of times props are used for added flare. Some of the kids even form duets or groups, and add whole dance routines.
"Havin' a great time in 2009," is the theme of this year's celebration. It takes place July 24-26, and the Lip Sync Contest is at the center stage in the park. At 3:30 p.m., the entertainment begins, hopefully to give everyone yet another year of fun memories.
