"We're getting people that are coming in every day to look for jobs on our computers," Nevada Public Library Director Beth Williams said. "I talked with our board about what we could do to assist our patrons and the community."
To assist, the Nevada Public Library will host an employment seminar on Thursday, March 26, from 10 a.m.-noon in the library meeting room. Vonnie Stewart-Kai, a workforce advisor from the Iowa Workforce Development Ames Center, is presenting the workshop. Willams said the workshop will cover a variety of topics, including how to search for a job, how to present yourself when applying and how to interview with confidence.
Williams also wanted to remind the community about the number of free resources for job-seekers at the Nevada Public Library. The library has nine computers (everything is free, except for printing charges), newspapers with help wanted ads, books on resumes and interviewing, and a variety of books on career fields.
Williams also offers a free computer class. The class includes instruction on basic computer skills, mouse management, setting up an e-mail account and basic Internet searching. Those classes are held before and after the library is open.
"Once I get four people interested, I start a new class," Williams said. "And each has four to five classes - depending on the group."
Williams has been teaching the computer class for the past several years. "Previously, there were a lot of senior citizens participating, and it still is that, but now (people) have the added pressure of the economy, and you have to be able to use a computer because so many of the job applications require that you do it online. You need an e-mail address and need to know how to access sites and fill out forms and send attachments."
