Billy Davis Jr. of Des Moines found the high side of Boone's banked one-third mile speedway to his liking Saturday night.
Davis, a veteran second generation driver, stayed on top and beat a stellar field of IMCA Modifieds to take the featured event with an estimated 1,200 race fans looking on.
Also winning features were Mike Pruitt of Redfield in the Karl Chevrolet IMCA Northern SportMods, Donavon Smith of Lake City in IMCA Stock Cars, Michael Murphy of Jefferson and Alan Van Gorp of Carlisle in IMCA Hobby Stocks, and Rick Dennis of Granger in Dwarf Cars.
Davis started on the outside of row one for the 20-lap modified feature and quickly exerted his dominance of the field. He went immediately to the high side of the track and took just a handful of laps to begin pulling away from the field. He was able to stay up front through a few caution periods and won handily.
"I like to run the high side here at Boone," Davis said. "Lots of times, though, you go up top and a couple of laps later you have to go race at the bottom. Not tonight - the top side was working all race long."
Davis virtually "grew up" in the racing game, watching his father Bill Davis win countless late model, then modified, features through a long career that ended just a couple of years ago. He counts those years watching his dad as among reasons for his own success.
"I just grew up helping dad with his race cars and that taught me a lot," Davis Jr. said. "Now, it's his turn. He's helping me."
Davis finished ahead of Kelly Lyons (Boone), Russ Dickerson (Boone), Cale Sponsler (Grimes) and Denny Pittman (Jamaica) in the feature.
Mike Pruitt, who builds his own race cars, also ran most of the 18-lap SportMod feature on the top as he won for the first time at Boone this year.
Asked if he preferred running the top side, Pruitt said, "Well, tonight the car did. We've been having a problem with the car pushing some this season, but tonight it worked. I could run either high or low, but it seemed to work best on top."
Pruitt won over Scott Davis (Madrid), early leader Paul Nagle (Nevada), Jeremy Embry (Granger) and Jacob Strayer (Newton), who started way back in the 12th row after qualifying through a B feature.
In the Stock Car main, Donavon Smith won the race after a fierce battle with Jefferson's Trent Murphy, pulling ahead for good on the final lap. Bryan Trogdon (Bouton), Robert Stofer (Jefferson) and Josh Daniels (Des Moines) rounded out the top five.
Eighteen-year-old Michael Murphy captured the first of two IMCA Hobby Stock mains. He's still driving the same home-built car he began his career with when he was 15. Murphy held off Matt Drottz (Des Moines), Jason Stringer (Marshalltown), Pat Mather (Greenfield) and Beau Kaplan (Ankeny) for the win.
Van Gorp used lapped traffic on the final lap to win the second IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Running second to Devin Smith (Lake City) just after the white flag was shown, the two front-runners came on a lapped car in turn two. They split - Smith going high and Van Gorp low around the lapped car - and Van Gorp drew even down the back stretch, making the final winning pass in turns 3 and 4. Those two finished ahead of Aaron Rudolph (Scranton), Jesse McCollaugh (Boone) and Kyle Dirks (Nevada).
A week earlier, Rick Dennis watched his 21-year-old son, Cory, win the Dwarf Car main after he got caught up in a turn two battle and fell far back in the field. He ran second until that point. Saturday, it was dad's turn as Rick Dennis led virtually wire-to-wire to win the feature over Charlie Brown (Nevada), Ed Zehm (Ames), Mike Kennedy (Boone) and Troy Hudson (Des Moines).
A field of 165 race cars signed in to do battle Saturday night.
Next week has been designated as Little League Night at Boone Speedway. All Little League baseball and softball players, in uniform, will be admitted free to the races. Gates open at 6 p.m., hot laps begin at 6:45 and the first race is set for 7:30 p.m.
