Wednesday was not a good day for the Des Moines Area Community College Bears baseball team.
The latest national Division II baseball poll showed that, for the first time this season, the Bears are no longer the top rated team. Defending national champion Louisiana State University of Eunice has now locked up more first place votes and outpolled the Bears overall 148-139, to take over the top spot as DMACC dropped to number two.
LSU is 34-5 for the season.
In addition to being dropped to number two nationally in the new poll, the Bears, stepping up to a higher competition level, lost a doubleheader to Division I Iowa Western Community College at Council Bluffs. The scores were 11-1 in six innings and 8-7.
DMACC is now 26-6.
There was not much to shout about in the six inning loss, 11-1.
The Bears were limited to five hits while pitchers Kolby Moore and George Jensen yielded 16.
Brashad Johnson had a double while Tyler Robbins, Jake Astor, Joel Hutter and Nick Anderson singled for the Bears hits. Johnson drove in the only DMACC run.
Moore worked five innings. He allowed six hits, six earned runs with no walks and three strikeouts. Jensen in 1 2/3 innings gave five hits, five earned runs with one walk.
In the 9-8 loss, the Bears trailed 5-0 after three innings but rallied for two runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to take a 7-5 lead.
Iowa Western came back with the tying runs in the sixth and punched home the winner in the last of the seventh.
Iowa Western won the battle of hits, 11-9.
For the Bears, Hutter socked a three-run homer in that five-run fifth inning spree while Astor had a triple and both Robbins and Anderson doubles.
Catcher Mark Radmacher had three hits, Robbins and Hutter two each, Hutter the three RBI and Anderson a pair of runs batted in.
The Bears sent four pitchers to the mound. Paul Brown worked the first three innings while Eric Holmes and Mark Schroeder followed up with one frame each and Nelson finished the final 1 1/3 innings and took the loss.
Most of the damage was off Brown and Jensen. Brown allowed five hits and five earned runs while Jensen gave three hits and three earned runs.
