A mother and her two daughter's dream of one day owning their own beauty salon became a reality in February when Helen George and her daughters, Jessie Lewis and Jacque Rosengreen, purchased Elaine's Hair Design from the former owner, Elaine Kline, of Boone, Feb. 1 and opened for business Feb. 9. Since then, they have been adding some new services and remodeling the salon, giving the business a new name - ANUDU Hair Styling Studio. The salon is located at 1712 Mamie Eisenhower Ave.
A grand opening and ribbon cutting will be held at ANUDU Tuesday, March 31 at 9:30 a.m., with the open house running until 6 p.m. Attendants will be able to register to win free tans, hair cuts, teeth whitening sessions and ear piercings. Hamburgers, hotdogs and chips will also be served from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Discounts will be offered to attendants who sign up for the permanent make-up service.
George, of Boone, is the owner and stylist, and her daughters, Lewis is the manager and stylist and Rosengreen, provides permanent make-up and professional teeth whitening. Cheri Russell has stayed on at ANUDU as a stylist, previously working at Elaine's Hair Design.
The staff brings over 60 years of combined experience to the studio. George has worked in the field for 30 years and managed salons previously, and Rosengreen was a dental assistant for three years and is licensed to provide permanent make-up, receiving her training from the previous owner, Elaine Kline. Russell has been in the field for 20 years and Lewis for 10 years.
"It has been a dream of ours since the kids were little. We used to drive by this shop when the girls were little and the girls would say 'Mom - look. There's a bootie shop,'" George said laughing. "We have always wanted to own our own shop, so it's a dream come true for us. We always wanted the kind of salon where people would feel very comfortable coming to. We have this slogan - 'We don't want to be the biggest, we want to be the best' and that's the feeling we want to give here - that every service that we do is the best."
The studio offers permanent make-up, professional teeth whitening, tanning, waxing, ear piercing, haircuts, hair coloring, hair perms, hair foils, beard trims and professional updos for formal occasions. Soon, ANUDU plans to add nail services to their line up. They also sell Redken products and if someone is looking for something special that is not carried in the shop, the product can be ordered for them.
George graduated from beauty school in 1979, moving on to work at The House of William in Fort Dodge and to manage a new styling salon in Fort Dodge, called The Hair Odyssey. She said they then built a second The Hair Odyssey, and she was managing the two salons at the same time.
"I had children and then I decided to put it all on hold for awhile. But now the kids are involved and that's what makes it fun - it's family," George said. "This is a field you never ever stop loving."
George said she has always loved the atmosphere that a salon provides and the excitement of providing a person with a new hairstyle, which is how they came up with the name for their studio.
"I managed a beauty salon years ago and I just loved the smell, the atmosphere of it and the clients," she said. "We named it ANUDU because years ago, when I was a cosmetologist, when I was practicing, I wondered what it was that made me really love the profession and it was when a woman walked in and said 'Just give me a new 'do. Make me beautiful - color me, cut me, whatever you want.' So, that's the exciting part of this art, this field, that makes you love it - everyday challenges."
The group hopes to be successful and make their clients happy.
"Our goal is to offer a service, to offer unique services. We've got fantastic artists here - people who do a great job. In this market, nowadays, you have to offer things that are unique, that will keep clients coming back. With the atmosphere, we want it fun for them when they walk in and to have it professional, but very casual," George said. "People have said 'To open a shop in Boone, why would you want to do that with this economy'. I said because I live in Boone, I love Boone, I love the people of Boone. We have lots of friends and a lot of good people that don't want to go anywhere other than Boone to do this. I really hope they give us a shot. We offer some things that other shops don't."
ANUDU Hair Styling Studio is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and welcomes walk-ins. It is also open on Tuesday and Thursday nights by appointment only. For more information on ANUDU Hair Styling Studio, call 432-2583.
