Mackenzie Schindler and Mark Garman were named Bishop Garrigan’s 2009 Homecoming Queen and King during coronation on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Last week, Bishop Garrigan High School held its 51st Homecoming. The theme was The Wild West.
On Sunday, each class created a float incorporating the theme of the week. The juniors walked away with first place with their western-themed float. The seniors and sophomores tied for second and the freshmen came in third.
On Monday, BGHS students didn't have school due to an inservice for teachers called Diocesan Ministries held in Spencer, so students kicked off the fun with Western Day on Tuesday.
The best dressed cowboys and girls for that day were Aubrey Meyers, Daniel Gelhaus, Zach Zittritsch and Dylan Kollasch. Later, the cross country team ran at the Algona Invitational at Whittemore.
Wednesday was Game Day. Each class decked out in their class colors.
Overall, the seniors, dressed in black, were victorious in the games, winning volleyball, kickball, Twister, ping-pong, dodge ball, boys' tug-of-war, ultimate football, boys' home run derby and video games.
"Seniors pretty much dominated Game Day," said Mackenzie Schindler, senior.
The juniors, dressed in white, won pie eating, trivia, and girls' home run derby while the sophomores, dressed in blue, came away with no wins.
Lastly, the freshmen, dressed in red, won girls' tug-of-war and hot dog eating.
"I will probably never eat another hot dog again," said Dana Miller, senior, hot dog eating contest participant.
To end the day of games, the freshman and senior girls took on the sophomore and junior girls in a Powder Puff football game.
The score was 28-14 with the sophomores and juniors celebrating a victory.
In unique color dress for the day, the winners were senior Bryan Berte, junior Miranda Gisch, sophomore Austin Salz, and freshman Shawn Vaske. Later, the Volleyball team played an away game at Iowa Falls.
Coronation was held on Wednesday, Sept. 30, in Friedmann Auditorium.
The king candidates were Brett Capesius, Nick Foertsch, Mark Garman, Daniel Krahenbuhl and David Reding.
The queen candidates were Molly Brashear, Kelly Klein, Alyse Meyers, Kayla Schiltz, and Mackenzie Schindler.
After tallying up the school votes, Mark Garman and Mackenzie Schindler were named king and queen. Then, the cheerleaders and dance squad members held a pep rally.
The seniors won the spirit bonus for being the loudest in the cheer competition. The seniors, juniors and sophomores tied for first place in the hoop design competition with the freshmen coming in second place.
Thursday was Celebrity Day.
The senior class had full participation with the other classes close behind. There was a wide range of celebrities such as The President, Jesus, football players, the pope, members of Kiss and Waldo. Best dressed were Jordan Springer for the seniors, Andrew Behr for the juniors, Brandon Schiltz for the sophomores and Noelle Vitzthum for the freshmen.
Thursday night, volleyball had a very intense game against Clarion. The BGHS girls prevailed in five games.
Friday was Dress-Up Day, and everyone was looking very sharp and nice. There was 100 percent participation in all grades. BGHS held a liturgy in the gym with Fr. Paul Bormann of Bancroft presiding.
Later on Friday afternoon, each class performed a skit. The sophomores won, and the juniors came in second. The seniors came in third while the freshmen placed last.
In another part of the competition, students collected food for the Food Pantry. Here, the seniors collected the most food and more points for the class competition. The juniors collected the second most items with the freshman third and the sophomores last.
Students were dismissed after the skits to get ready for the two o'clock parade down State Street.
Although it was chilly, all of the students from Seton, and also the band, participated in the parade. All of the floats as well as the various BGHS teams were in the parade. Also, the Garrigan Solid Gold Marching Band performed.
Friday night, the Junior Class hosted a pork loin sandwich fund-raiser.
Then, the BGHS football team took home a win against Newell Fonda with a score of 24 to 7. After the game, the Homecoming dance was held in the gym at Garrigan. Many students participated and had a lot of fun.
Saturday was Band Day in Algona and the 1A BGHS Marching Band walked away with firsts in the street and field competitions.
In the overall results of the BGHS 2009 Homecoming competition, the seniors won collecting 156.25 points.
The juniors were close behind with 148.6 points. The sophomores came in third with 143.75 points, and the freshmen earned 125.3 points.
"Everybody seemed to have fun, and it ran very smoothly. The Student Council did a nice job getting everything organized," said Student Council and Homecoming Moderator Mr. David Burrow.
