Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne’s Jay Nissen (No. 89) and Matt Goglin (No. 47) combine to tackle Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka’s Jake Meinders for a loss in the Panthers 52-14 homecoming win Friday night.
Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne’s Jay Nissen (No. 89) and Matt Goglin (No. 47) combine to tackle Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka’s Jake Meinders for a loss in the Panthers 52-14 homecoming win Friday night.
Scoring the first two times they touched the ball, the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne Panther football team rolled to a 52-14 homecoming victory over the Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka Tigers. The eight-man, district three contest was played at Corwith on Friday, Oct. 2.
"It is always nice to win on homecoming week," said Panther Coach Ryan Wagner. "We got off to a quick start. Our front four on defense played very well and our defensive backs are getting better.
"Wesley Steward played well tonight and to have a great player like Jason Carroll, it really helps. We need a little work on our two-point conversions but we will continue to get better as a team."
"We knew that in order to compete with Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne, we could not make many mistakes," said Tiger Coach Doug Mogensen. "Unfortunately on offense, we made too many early that we were never able to get into a rhythm. As part of our preparation we were not able to simulate the speed of a couple of their backs.
Even though we were in position on defense to make some plays, we failed to wrap up and take their backs down. We will have to play a much better game against Clarksville this week to have a victory."
Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka got the ball first and had to punt and Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne took over on the Tiger's 26-yard line. On the first play, quarterback Caleb Anderson broke a couple of tackles and dashed 26 yards for a score.
On their next possession, the Tigers failed to move the ball and Kyle Eden boomed a 50-yard punt to the Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne's 19-yard line.
Carroll picked up the wet pigskin and sprinted down the right sideline for a 61-yard punt return for a touchdown. On the maroon-and-white's third possession, Anderson went the final two yards to push the advantage to 18-0 at the end of the first period.
The Panthers went to the air for their next two scores on an eight-yard pass to Jay Nissen and a seven-yard pass to Luke Wilhite from Anderson. Carroll's 45-yard scoring dash moved the halftime lead to 36-0.
Third quarter scores came on a 31-yard run by Carroll and a 26-yard romp by Steward to lead 52-0 at the end of three quarters. The Panther starters were finished for the night after limiting the Tigers to 32 total yards in 41 plays the first three quarters.
Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka avoided the shutout in the final 12 minutes when Aaron Sorenson scored on a 49-yard run. Kyle Pals ran 12 yards to paydirt with 2:10 remaining as Sorenson added the final points of the night with his conversion run.
Carroll led the maroon-and-white in rushing with 145 yards in 10 carries. Anderson added 82 yards in his eight carries and Steward added 56 yards in just three totes. Anderson was 2-of-4 passing for 15 yards and a pair of scores with Nissen and Wilhite snaring the touchdown passes.
Steward led the Panthers in tackles with 10 followed by Nissen with nine; Dallas Grein had seven while teammates Bryce Vorland, Mitchell Shipman and Carroll all had six stops. Matt Goglin recovered a Tiger fumble and Steward had a quarterback sack. Cody Goetz blocked an Eden punt and Wilhite recovered the ball for the winners.
Sorenson led the Tigers in rushing with 70 yards in 10 carries and Jake Meinders added 22 yards in 15 trips. Meinders was 3-of-9 passing for 13 yards and Eric Spear was 1-of-3 for seven yards in the loss. Jacob Finer in three passes for 18 yards and Tommy Schutter caught one for two yards.
Finer led the black-and-gold in tackles with eight stops while teammates Brandon Thilges, Ryan Hobbs, Pals and Schutter all had six tackles. Collin Julius recovered a Panther fumble in the fourth quarter for the Tigers.
Corwith-Wesley-LuVerne improves to 4-1 overall and continue to lead district three with a 3-0 record. Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka fell to 2-4 overall and is now 2-2 in district play. The Panthers travel to Janesville this week.
