Over two weeks ago, Algona lost signal from two Mankato, Minnesota, TV stations due to an antenna being replaced on the stations' 1000 foot tower. The tower that broadcasts the signals for KEYC and FOX Mankato must be shut down while work is being completed. KEYC is broadcasting on a temporary low-power signal, and the FOX Mankato digital signal is not being transmitted at this time.
The project may not be completed until the middle of next week. AMU Cable TV transmits KEYC on channel 12 and FOX Mankato on channel 2. "KEYC management had expected the project to be completed in about five days, but work has been delayed due to weather and construction issues," said Jennings.

The old antenna was taken off the tower Wednesday, and a new 9 ton antenna was hoisted to the top of the tower yesterday, only to be lower to the ground as it did not fit properly on the tower. "The new antenna is expected to be pulled back up today (June 5th) after workers make adjustments to the tower," said Jennings. Once the antenna is installed, a new splitter and transmission line also will be replaced.

KEYC is putting the new antenna on its tower as part of the transition to digital television. June 12th is the deadline for full-power TV stations in the United States to make the DTV transition. The low-power signal can only reach to about Fairmont. "Once the new antenna goes on-line, management expects the digital signals to be as strong as the former analog signal," said Jennings. This is the first time KEYC has replaced its antenna in 50 years.

Algona Municipal Utilities is ready for the DTV transition, according to Jennings. "WHO and FOX 17 of Des Moines switched from analog to digital in February, and there have been very few problems," said Jennings. Anyone with questions about the DTV transition on June 12th may call 295-3584 or stop and visit Jennings in the AMU office at 104 West Call Street during regular business hours.
