Boone stays unbeaten in Little Hawkeye

Boone defeated Knoxville 3-2 and 11-5 Monday night in Boone to stay perfect in the Little Hawkeye Conference at 15-0.

In the first game, Boone (19-4 0 overall) got on the board first, scoring single runs in the second and third innings. Knoxville tied the game in the top of the fourth. The Toreadors then came back with the decisive run in the bottom of the fifth.

Nick Anderson went seven innings, allowing two runs, three hits, two walks and nine strikeouts.

Josh Fran had three hits, including a double. Mike Eckhart had two hits, also with a double, and Blaine Reutter had two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Knoxville grabbed a quick 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Boone battled back with four runs in the bottom of the third and went ahead 8-5 thanks to a four-run fifth. The Toreadors tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

Cris Ely, Anderson, Eckhart and Reutter each had two hits. Ely had two doubles and two RBIs, and Anderson and Eckhart each hit doubles. Reutter also collected three RBIs. Tyler Sunstrom belted a homerun and drove in four.

Reutter recorded the win for Boone allowing five runs, nine hits, two walks and struck out 10.

South Hamilton, North Polk split

North Polk, behind a seven-run third inning, defeated South Hamilton 10-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Monday night at Jewell. The Hawks came back to win the second game 3-1.

In the first game, Brett Bell had two hits and an RBI for the Hawks.

In the second game, Bell pitched a five-hit complete game and struck out seven.

South Hamilton scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to build a 3-0 lead before North Polk scored one run in the top of the fifth.

Bell had two hits, and Alex Andrew had three hits for the Hawks.

South Hamilton (8-9, 7-7 HOIC) plays at Woodward-Granger Wednesday night. North Polk hosts Colo-Nesco.

Ames sophs defeat Mason City

The Ames High sophomore baseball team beat Mason City 9-4 Monday evening at Mason City.

Eric Houk pitched six innings, giving up four runs and striking out two.

Alex Miller hit a double and a triple as he drove in four runs. Nathan Hurley and Tanner DeKovic each hit doubles, and Eric Terry had a single for the Little Cyclones.

Ames JV tops Roosevelt

The Ames High junior varsity baseball team beat Des Moines Roosevelt 8-4 Friday.

Matt Van Winkle and Matt Bonestroo had three hits each. Bonestroo had two hits.

SOFTBALL

No. 1 North Polk falls to No. 10 PCM

Top-ranked (Class 2A) North Polk dropped its first Heart of Iowa Conference game of the season, losing 3-2 to 10th-ranked Prairie City-Monroe Monday in Alleman.

The Mustangs (23-4) had a big first inning, plating two runs off Comet all-state pitcher Sammy Snygg. They added the eventual winning run in the third.

The Comets (31-3) scored a run in the bottom of the first, but were held down until scoring a run in the seventh.

Snygg got an RBI double for the Comets, who had just four hits yet stranded nine runners on base.

Roland-Story hits past Gilbert

Roland-Story clubbed four doubles and a triple as they got past Gilbert 6-1 Monday night at Gilbert.

Mackenzie Neely, Jessie Borton, Morgan Swanson and Danielle Mott each collected doubles and Ashley Greff added a triple. Kyli Hassebrock had two singles and two RBIs for Roland-Story. Danielle Hein had a double for Gilbert.

Swanson allowed one run, four hits, one walk and fanned eight.

Katie Clark suffered the loss as she gave up six runs on 10 hits while issuing two walks and striking out five.

Ames loses pair at Mason City

The Ames High softball team dropped a pair of games at Mason City Monday.

The Little Cyclones lost the opener 8-5. Molly Moore had two hits and two RBIs.

Ames (6-23) lost the second game 4-1. Tierney Rogers, Brooke Wood and Clare Kohler had Ames' three hits.

Boone's Frei throws shutout

Boone pitcher Corinne Frei fired a three-hit shutout in the Toreadors' 7-0 victory over South Tama Monday in Tama. Frei struck out 12 and walked none.

Courtney Poling and Nicole Danna each had two hits and two RBIs for the Toreadors. Also driving in runs for the Toreadors were Lynsey Sunstrom, Alyssa Sobolik and Chelsea Larson.

Hawks fall to Colfax-Mingo
      
South Hamilton struggled at the plate and lost a 5-2 decision to Colfax-Mingo Monday night at Colfax.

Abigail Swalla staked the Hawks to a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the first. Colfax-Mingo tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

The TigerHawks scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. South Hamilton cut that to 3-2 in the top of the fourth on Sarah Samuelson's RBI double, but Colfax-Mingo put the game away with single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Samuelson allowed five runs, nine hits and walked one.
