Ames High’s Daniel Jahren puts Boone’s Steven Howard on his back during their match at 112 pounds during a dual meet Monday night in Boone. Jahren won the match by a 21-12 major decision. The teams tied 34-34, but Boone was declared the winner by criteria.
BOONE - The Ames High and Boone wrestling teams battled to a 34-34 tie Monday night, but the Toreadors were the winners.

Boone won the meet via criteria. Rules stipulate that the first criteria in breaking ties is matches won, and the Toreadors had an 8-6 advantage in that area.

"That was one to really get the blood going," Ames coach Chad Zmolek said. "It could have gone either way on a few (matches), so it was pretty exciting."

Zmolek said he was pleased with his team's effort. The Little Cyclones handed Perry a 63-16 loss before taking the mat against Boone.

"We scored a lot of points, I thought we were doing some good technique, good energy," Zmolek said. "I knew once we hit Boone, it would be a little different level, but we hung in there. I was pretty happy with what we did."

The meet began at 189 pounds, and Taylor Knight staked Ames to a 6-0 lead by pinning Zach Larson in 2 minutes, 22 seconds.

Knight's gave the Little Cyclones a lead they would not relinquish until Blake Campbell gave the Toreadors a 31-28 advantage when he pinned Luke Stephenson at 152.

Ames regained the advantage at 34-31 on Quentin Ring's fall against Sam Melton (3:45), but Alex Derry handed Riley Banach a 9-3 loss in the final match to knot the score at 34-34.

"The boys wrestled hard," Boone coach Barry Jennings said. "Ames is a different team than what we've seen in the past. They've got a lot of good kids coming up."

About all Jennings was disappointed about was the technical violations against his team. Several Boone wrestlers gave up penalty points for locked hands.

"Other than that, they did great," Jennings said. "We tend to be in better shape than the other guys and that was impressive. We were still going hard at it in the third period."

Boone's Michael Erb followed Knight's pin with a 6-2 decision against Colton Vosburg at 215, but Ames answered with a forfeit victory at 285 to open up a 12-3 lead.

Boone closed to 12-7 on Brogan Austin's 14-3 major decision at 103 pounds, but Ames got a 21-12 decision from Daniel Jahren at 112 and a fall from Nick Schroeder at 119 to take command at 22-7.

Jahren's win was particularly impressive because he gave up a reversal and five near-fall points to Steven Howard late in the second period to trail 10-7 heading into the third and final period.

Jahren gained a 12-10 lead with a takedown and three back points early in the period, surrendered a reversal but came back with an escape, a takedown and six back points to close out the win.

Boone picked up a regular decision from Dustin Lynch at 125, a fall from Dillon Dalton at 130 and a regular decision from Daniel Baker at 135 to close to 22-19.

The two teams then exchanged falls as Ames' Ben Swalla stuck Will Cornelius in 2:35 at 140, and Boone's Mike Craun pinned Ross Blummer in 2:59 at 145, making it a 28-25 match heading into the match at 152.

"We got a lot of young kids, a lot of them with first time experience at varsity," Zmolek said. "I was really happy with what they did."

Ames had its way with Perry as Banach and Knight recorded pins to give the Little Cyclones a 12-0 lead after two matches. Pins by Alex Olinger at 285 and Jahren, coupled with a forfeit at 103,pushed the advantage to 27-6 and the Little Cyclones coasted from there.

Luke Swalla (135), John McClelland (140), Ben Swalla (145) and Stephenson also had falls in the match.

"I hope the kids can see what they can do when everybody's clicking," Zmolek said. "Hopefully we can carry that kind of energy into a stronger team like a Boone of teams in our league like Fort Dodge and Urbandale. We'll need some of that."

Boone also had its way with Perry, beating the Bluejays 48-25 in the first meet of the night.

The Little Cyclones wrestle at Des Moines Roosevelt Thursday.
