The Life Skills Assistant is a volunteer appointment serving under the general supervision of the Director of Athletics and/or his designee. The Life Skills Assistant will serve those student-athletes who voluntarily seek counsel on a variety of practical, moral, spiritual and personal issues. The Life Skills Assistant will serve as a conduit/facilitator to a broad spectrum of campus and off campus resources; will be aware of and strictly adhere to all NCAA and University rules; will respect the confidentiality needs of student-athletes; and will be available, as time permits, to all student-athletes at Iowa State University.
The Life Skills Assistant is required to respect and to preserve the confidentiality of communications to him or her in a counseling relationship and will not be required to reveal confidences except as provided by law;
The Life Skills Assistant will not pressure, coerce or proselytize team members and will only be made available as a resource for student-athletes who choose on their own to receive counsel or support;
The Life Skills Assistant will be available to attend football practices and conditioning workouts throughout the year, football games, and football team meetings and other football related events with the goal of building trust and credibility with the student-athletes. The Life Skills Assistant will also be available, as time permits, to attend other sports practices and team meetings, as requested by other head coaches and/or student-athletes.
The Life Skills Assistant will meet and assist those student-athletes who voluntarily seek counsel on a multitude of social issues, both in an individual and group settings.
The Life Skills Assistant will be a resource to student-athletes in all sports who desire access to spiritual counsel;
The Life Skills Assistant will respect the diversity of backgrounds of student athletes and while available for spiritual or religious counseling, will avoid initiation of such discussion;
The Life Skills Assistant may provide or conduct religious activities consistent with his or her faith and training; however, participation of all persons in such activities must be voluntary, and the Life Skills Assistant must be ready to assist student athletes in finding suitable ministries in the faith of their choice.
The Life Skills Assistant will serve in a volunteer role and not be funded with any State, University, Athletic or Foundation funds other than being provided access to the necessary Department of Athletics' facilities (locker room, meeting rooms, etc.) and activities (games, practices, meetings, etc.) required to provide the specific services requested by the Department of Athletics;
The activities of the Life Skills Assistant will be evaluated on an annual basis by the Director of Athletics and/or his designee. In addition, the activities of the Life Skills Assistant will also be monitored annually through the department's existing confidential student-athlete evaluations and exit interviews.
Qualifications
Prior experience working with student-athletes in a coaching or administrative capacity at the Division I level;
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of what it takes both mentally and physically to be a Division I student-athlete;
Professional training and prior work experience with crisis management counseling for college students;
Certification in, or demonstrated knowledge of, as well as commitment to the principles of Clinical Pastoral Education, and specifically Standard 101 of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.; and
Ability to administer to persons of all faiths or no faith.
