Campbell received 4,319 votes to Shelness's 1,019 votes.
Voter turnout was about 12 percent.
"It certainly is overwhelming to look at the responsibilities," Campbell said of her election as mayor. "Looking at the new council and how to go about making that group gel is probably going to be the first thing on all of our plates. I foresee it won't be a dull four years."
Shelness said he felt just fine about the results, noting his reason for running was not ultimately for the mayoral seat.
"My reason for running was to get the word out about the discrimination that the city of Ames and the university engages in by treating university students like second-class citizens," he said. "My goal was to get the message out . . . if I won mayor, that's gravy."
