Cleaning up Campustown
| |
To the Editor This is a thank-you letter to those helping us face the challenge of litter in Campustown - an ongoing project. On Sunday mornings, you'll see young people picking up trash as part of their community service sentencing. But this a collaboration. Thanks go to the city of Ames, which provides bags and gloves free of charge; to the Juvenile Court system and especially to Candace Tollakson, the Juvenile Court officer who provides the overall supervision for this activity; to Tim Reger from Copy Works and Robert Bingham from Kum and Go, who offer their Dumpsters; to the Student Affairs Commission, who came up with the idea in the first place; and to city manager Steve Schainker, who turned talk into action. If you're out on beautiful Sunday morning and see a young person with an orange belt and trash bag, let him (or her) know that we appreciate the effort to make our neighborhood a better place to live. Let our City Council know that we'd like this to become a permanent program for youthful offenders in Ames. And don't forget: all persons in our South Campus Area Neighborhood are encouraged to attend the annual SCAN meeting at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Crawford School. We hope to see you there.
