Broken pipe results in manure release near Stratford

STRATFORD - A broken manure transfer pipe has resulted in hog manure being released into Squaw Creek near Stratford in Hamilton County.

The release originally occurred at the Westrum Farms operation on Oct. 8, but the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was not notified of the situation until Oct. 15 when a complaint was made. While on the scene Tuesday, the DNR found manure releases coming from overflows at two additional hog confinement buildings on the site.

A clean-up of the manure is being conducted under of the supervision of the DNR. The manure reaching the stream could likely have been avoided had the broken pipe been reported when it happened and technical assistance provided.

The spill did not result in a fish kill. The incident is still under investigation and enforcement actions are possible.
