Hot rods, bicycles, foot races, football, kayaking, a blues band, Shakespeare and barbecue - the All-American Weekend in Ames, Thursday, to Sunday, Aug. 28 to 31, offers a full schedule for the holiday.

Iowa State's football game against South Dakota State on Thursday kicks off festivities.

On Friday night, a Shakespeare contest will be held in Bandshell Park. Just down the street, The Blue Band will play live music at Olde Main Brewing Co. And just north on Grand Avenue, Captain Midnight's Run for Cystic Fibrosis will begin in the northwest parking lot of North Grand Mall.

Registration for the Captain Midnight race is $13 ahead of time and $16 the day of the race. The first 250 participants will receive a T-shirt. Each winner from the male and female classes will receive $100, and medals and T-shirts will be given to each winner of each age group. The fraternity or sorority with the most participants in the race will win $100. The fastest chapter, based on average times of the house's top four finishers will receive pizza and pop as the winner of the Captain's Cup trophy.

Saturday features a car show at North Grand Mall, with barbecue and a disc jockey.

On Sunday, the second-annual Great Ames Adventure Race highlights activity. The triathlon-style competition combines a 3-mile paddle in canoes or kayaks, a 15-mile bike ride and a 5K run. Contestants can run alone, or run in registered groups of 2, 3 or 4 members. The race will start at 7:30 a.m. at Ada Hayden Heritage Park. An awards presentation will follow at the Moose Lodge north of the park. The lodge will host a pancake breakfast for runners and members of the public from 8 a.m. to noon.

Registration for the race is $30 per applicant, and the pancake breakfast costs $4 per person.

GAAR is being sponsored by Metabolic Technologies Inc., of Ames. For more information or to sign up, contact Dave Kraemer at (515) 232-2160, Dennis Jones at (515) 232-2923 or Don Muff at (515) 292-2725, or visit greatames adventurerace.org.
