Ames residents Peter Biechler, a student at Roland-Story High School, and Matthew Lee, a student at Ames High School, were selected to attend the 2008 Congressional Academy, held June 29 to July 11, in Washington, D.C. The Congressional Academy for American History and Civics leads current high school juniors in a study of the pivotal turning points in American history memorialized by the Declaration of Independence, the Gettysburg Address and the "I Have a Dream" speech. One hundred high school juniors, two students from each state, were selected to participate in the Congressional Academy.
The following local students have been named to the dean's list during the spring 2008 semester at Drake University in Des Moines. Students achieved this academic honor by earning a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

Cynthia J. "C.J." Jackson, Baylor Business Review marketing director, received a prestigious Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators at an award ceremony in New York City. From more than 1,000 entrants in 30 countries, just 116 Gold Quills were awarded. In addition, Baylor Business Review won a Public Relations of America National Award, plus an international award from the International Academy of the Visual Arts (9,000 entrants). Baylor Business Review is Hankamer School of Business' magazine. Jackson, daughter of Wayne and Betty Jackson, of Ames, is an Ames High School and Iowa State University graduate.
Erica Jean Baker and Jared Matthew Downard, both of Ames, earned honor roll distinction for the spring 2008 semester at the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Honor roll criteria vary among the university's academic units. Some schools honor the top 10 percent of students enrolled, some establish a minimum grade-point average and others raise the minimum grade-point average for each year students are in school. Students must complete a minimum number of credit hours to be considered for the honor roll.
Brandon Robson, of Ames, recently received the 2008 Channel Bio Corp. Scholarship, awarded to 62 students across the Midwest who excelled in academics, leadership and service. The scholarship committee selected students based on their academic achievements, activities, awards and honors and their educational and career goals.
Andrew Heiligenthal and Britta Larson, both of Ames, graduated following the spring 2008 semester from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn.
Joanna Dobson and Catherine Glatz, both of Ames, have been named to the dean's list for academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2007-08 school year at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. To be eligible for the dean's list a student must have been registered as a full-time, degree-seeking student and may not have been on a study away program. Furthermore, a student must have achieved a semester grade-point average of at least 3.75, 12 or more credits on a regular grading option, no grades below C-, and no withdrawal or incomplete grades for the semester. Grades for activity, practicum, and technique courses in dance, music, and physical education are not factored into eligibility for the dean's list.
Stacia Buck, of Ames; Allie Busse, Kayla Madden and Anna Modeland, all of Boone; Jessica Wannemuehler, of Gilbert; Stephanie Krueger and Leisha Ristau, both of Nevada; and Gered Burkhardt, of Slater, were all named to the dean's list for the spring 2008 semester at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. These students have achieved a 3.3 grade-point average or higher after completing 12 or more credit hours with the college.

Nancy Donaldson, Lynn Fawcett, Pat Eitel, Tania Tipton and Tina Newton, members of the World Goods display team, received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Gov. Chet Culver during a special ceremony June 30, in Des Moines. The Governor's Volunteer Award program was established in 1982 to honor and recognize volunteers for the commitment, service and time that they contribute to Iowa's government agencies and nonprofit organizations. The display team, led by Nancy Donaldson and store manager Tina Newton, set up a display weekly at Café Diem in downtown Ames.
Anuradha Biswas, of Ames, received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering following May 2008 graduation ceremonies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Darajun Abel, a senior in family and consumer science education and studies at Iowa State University and native of Ames, has received the Helen Green Grieve Scholarship from the ISU College of Human Sciences.
Alice Hartzler, a freshman at Iowa State University and graduate of Ames High School, has received the Ethel McKinley Bliss Scholarship from the ISU College of Human Sciences.
Emily Griffith, a freshman in apparel merchandising, design and production at Iowa State University and graduate of Gilbert High School, has received the Jan Korslund Scholarship from the ISU College of Human Sciences.
Kristin Geiger, a sophomore in apparel merchandising, design and production at Iowa State University and graduate of Ames High School, has received the Neva M. Petersen Scholarship from the ISU College of Human Sciences.
Aviv Luban and Sarit Luban, of Ames, were both named to the dean's list for spring semester 2008 at Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass. Students on the dean's list have attained a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Aviv also graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies and a minor in philosophy.
Amila Dias, of Ames, was named to the dean's list for the spring term at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
Tabitha Porter, of Gilbert, graduated this spring with an AA degree from Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls.
Song-Charng Kong, an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department at Iowa State University, is one of 10 mechanical engineering professors to receive the SAE International's Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. They were honored during the SAE 2008 World Congress in Detroit. The Teetor Award, established in 1953, recognizes outstanding engineering educators and offers them the opportunity to meet and exchange views with practicing engineers in their fields.
Kong supervises an engine research laboratory at ISU that consists of various engine test cells. He also developed a laboratory curriculum that provides undergraduate students with hands-on experience on internal combustion engines.
Kong has organized and chaired numerous technical conferences, and has served on review panels for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies. He has nearly 30 journal publications and more than 20 conference papers to his credit.
