Candidate forum held by Gilbert Main Street Association

The Gilbert Main Street Association hosted a mayoral and city council candidate forum Thursday night. Held at the Gilbert High School cafeteria before a small audience of about 25 people, the meeting gave each candidate a few minutes to introduce themselves and to speak about their concerns and goals for the city.

Running for mayor are John Popp and Tim Morrow. Current Mayor Yvonne Wannemuehler is not seeking re-election.

John Popp - Gilbert resident since 1982, engineer for Popp Engineering of Ames. Current member of the Gilbert city council.

* Supports continued growth of the Gilbert community, building on the recent success of the fire station and historical building.

* Supports maintenance and improvements in city services, including storm drains, sewer system and park development.

* Supports working with the Gilbert school system to continue excellence in education for the community.

Holding up a small packet of seed corn, Popp compared the potential of Gilbert to "the promise of the seed."

Tim Morrow - Gilbert resident for 15 years, works in industrial supply sales. Has served Gilbert as a council member and as mayor pro tem.

* Would like to encourage more interaction in the community.

* Supports making Gilbert more friendly to outside investors and business growth opportunities.

* Supports maintaining and expanding infrastructure.

* Supports more use and interaction of Gilbert boards and commissions.

Morrow said he ran for office because he "saw the need to improve communication with the community, as evidenced by the small group here tonight."

Running for Gilbert City Council are Chad Cook, Bob Jaquis, Shaon Anderson, and Jamie Miller, for three open council seats.
      
Chad Cook - Gilbert resident for 8 years. Formerly head football coach and teacher with the Gilbert school district. Returned from active military duty in Afghanistan in 2005. Current member of the Gilbert city council.

* Considers Gilbert a "city in progress."

* Supports Main Street and local business growth

* Supports anything that "makes sense for the common good of the community."

* Supports attracting commercial ventures to Gilbert, as well as reasonable growth.

Cook said that as a city council member he will continue to represent "quality of life, and fiscal responsibility."

Bob Jaquis - Gilbert resident for 12 years. Employed at the USDA National Soil Tilth Lab. Has served Gilbert as mayor for two terms, and is current member of Gilbert city council.

* Supports working closely with school board in the construction of new school, and the need to extend water and sewer services to the project.

* Supports encouraging commercial growth to build tax base.

* Supports attracting affordable and low maintenance housing options to Gilbert such as townhomes and condominiums.

* Supports continued improvement of the park system.

Jaquis said "I decided to run for re-election because I was excited about the new elementary school."

Shaon Anderson - Resident of Gilbert for 3 years. Employed as an engineer for Siemens in Ankeny.

* Supports Gilbert being "proactive" in local development, so the community determines its own fate.

* Supports taking active stance in bringing new business to town.

* Supports the expansion of water and sewer infrastructure.

"Gilbert needs to grow, but with a good plan, it can keep its small town feel," Anderson said.

Jamie Miller - Gilbert resident for seven years. Employed as a police officer for the city of Ames.

* Believes community needs to take more active role in "selling" Gilbert to local families, especially Ames residents within the Gilbert school district.

* Supports continuation of infrastructure growth.

* Supports formation of economic development committee to draw small businesses to Gilbert.

* Supports the pursuit of federal and state grants to fund community improvement.

Miller said, "I want Gilbert to be known as a strong city, and I want to be a breath of fresh air on the council, a leader."
